Last night the Phillies faced a tough Red Sock team. The Red Socks are undefeated this year and have the best pitcher in the league, but the Phillies hung in there and played one of their best games of the year. In the top of the third inning the Red Socks had a 4-0 lead and the bases were loaded with two outs. The hitter knocked a ground ball toward right field. Lowden was playing second base and sprang to his left to field the ball, then threw a strike to first base for the inning-ending out.
In the bottom of the third Lowden came up to the plate with no-one on base and two outs. He got behind in the count 0-2 but showed good patience and wound up drawing a walk, only the second time the Phils had put a runner on base in the game. He stole second base and then third. The Red Sox pitcher walked the next Phillies batter, who promptly took off to steal second. The catcher threw the ball to second base...and Lowden sprinted in to score. A double-steal for the Phillies first run of the game. Final score: Red Socks 5, Phillies 2, but a commendable effort in the loss. And, the good news was Lowden was awarded an MVP medal for his efforts!
